June 2024 -
Social and Emotional characteristics of Giftedness, Children First, Delhi India

Vidushi Chaudhry led an in-house training for the psychologists at Children First in New Delhi. They wanted to learn more about the gifted students they encounter in their therapeutic work. In a conversation spanning five hours, they asked some interesting questions like- 1. Are there any kinds of giftedness that cannot be assessed on a traditional test? Absolutely. How would you assess conflict resolution, empathy, curiosity, resilience or problem solving? Most tests don't. There are few or no formal assessments for a child outside K-12 education- think of children still working in agriculture or those selling things on traffic signals. 2. We often meet gifted or twice exceptional students who are struggling. What are some of the joys giftedness can add to a person's life? A 4th grader asked- " Do adopted kids get to decide if they want to be adopted?" He had been thinking about this for a week, since he heard about adoption. This capacity to feel compassion and empathy is one of the joys. Another is the capacity to feel incredible beauty- students will share how they have been moved to tears by a piece of music or art or a visit to a particular exhibit in a museum. Many students are deeply passionate, about the periodic table or space or snakes and they feel huge energy from reading/ studying/exploring these subject areas. Then, there are kids who are enthralled by thorny problems- making a machine they invented work, designing a solution for something they care for- and the productive challenge adds multiple dimensions to them. This is a short list of the joys giftedness could bring. The challenges that it brings are oft-mentioned and many. It was a deeply enriching experience.

December 2023 - Learning Matters, New Delhi, India

In December, Vidushi had the wonderful opportunity to engage with educators, psychologists and administrators from schools in the Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida corridor. These workshops, organized by Learning Matters, focused on Gifted Education, and Thinking Skills. It was heartening to learn that many schools are committing time, resources and personnel to serve advanced learners. It was also clear that more investment is required for this nascent field to develop.

It was also clear that more investment is required for this nascent field to develop. It felt good to be back in India, and learning what teachers there are focusing on. I was glad to see the intelligence in the room, as well as a willingness to grapple with the complexity of serving students with advanced needs equitably.
